Breathality: Wind of the Spirit

On Sunday, July 26, we will be starting a series exploring the story, history and work of the Holy Spirit. This series will take us back to many ancient stories, and will land us smack dab on the cores of spiritual and religious belief--faith, experience and those inexpressible moments of 'something more' in life.

This journey will probably take us through to the end of the summer. If you are interested in really diving in (i.e. a "keener"), here are some readings that you may find helpful in filling in lots of the back story:

  • The Meaning of Revelation by Richard Niebuhr (meaty reading, but a great series of connecting thoughts that bridge our last series on the origin of the Bible with the theme of divine revelation--a prominate focal point in the study of the role of the spirit)
  • The Left Hand of God by Adolf Holl (warning: this work is rather demeaning to many traditional beliefs, and is written in a manner which some may consider rather sarcastic; for a more "middle of the road" approach, more sensitive readers might prefer Aristotle's Children by Richard E. Rubenstein which covers most of the same historical periods)
  • I have also found Karl Barth's The Holy Spirit and the Christian Life to be a very thoughtful and meaningful read, although, quite frankly, ample caffeine is required to slug through it.

When we are doing a series like this I often blog quite a bit about it as well. If you are interested in following along, you can subscribe to my blog here. -- James
